Abstract
‘Imagining Otherwise’ explored notions of performance and belonging. Made with graduate dance students at Trinity Laban Conservatoire it considered their position as young dancers on the brink of becoming professionals drawing on documentary approaches to dance making or as termed by choreographer Victoria Marks dance portraiture (2003). Using humorous alongside poetic text/spoken word the work reflected on the idea of imagination, drawing a parallel between the experience of observing a performance and imagining what else it could be (essentially what you imagine and is not on show) and the notion of ‘imagining otherwise’ imagining a different reality in reference to world events and the political climate we, and particularly these young performers, find themselves in. Methodologically the process encompassed improvisatory and choreographic responses to imagined spaces, beings as well as reflection on notions of home and belonging, where might you feel at home, what the landscape of home might mean or invoke in you as a performer.
